As a person who was interviewed for this book and who appears as a "character" in it, I believe this book should be categorized as fiction. Like most good friends, I did a lot of listening and nodding.
It is really difficult for those of us who knew Michael to see him portrayed so poorly. It's just been incredible.. I was assigned this book for a teaching methods class in college. Amazon should have indicated on the book's site that his version did not contain the "Plates" in this version.. But at the time I didn't feel good enough. Of course being the Pigzas, they are not actually going through the legal system to do this which sets up a whole new set of problems.
Joey's sense of self will not disappear without a fight though and he is buffeted between wanting to please his parents and his desire and need to hold on to his real identity. This was the 1980s and there were very few gay men or woman who were "out" at work.
